80mm Spindle Upgrade

SainSmart sells water-cooled spindles for the Genmitsu PROVerXL series but not for the 3030-PROVer Max. The mounting plate of the 3030 does not provide the necessary holes to mount the adapter plate that comes with these spindles. The following instructions will help you mount a water-cooled spindle on the 3030-PROVer Max using a custom adapter plate that you can machine using the stock 300W spindle.

You can download the STL file for machining the adapter plate:

Adapter Plate

The adapter plate is a 12mm (.500") thick aluminum plate that is mounted to the existing mounting plate of the 3030-PROVer Max. The plate has cutouts to accommodate the two vertical mounting studs which provide additional stability. If you have an M5 tapping tool, you can tap the holes for the spindle mounting bracket (change the hole size to 4.2 mm). Otherwise, you can use M5 nuts and bolts to secure the spindle mounting bracket to the adapter plate.

The small 2.5mm holes secure the air nozzle bracket that comes with the spindle. Tap them with an M3 tap.

Machining the plate on the stock 300W spindle requires some patience. Using Kiri:Moto, you can use the following settings to machine the plate:

  • Tool: 1/8" (3.175 mm) single flute, flat end mill
  • Feed Rate: 500 mm/min
  • Plunge Rate: 30 mm/min
  • Spindle Speed: 6000 RPM
  • Depth of Cut: 0.2 mm (1.6mm for clean pass)
  • Stepover: 1.27 mm or 40%

The stock 300W spindle is not very rigid, so make sure you do multiple clean passes to ensure all holes are cut to specification. Assist the spindle by removing chips frequently.
